As someone who occasionally feels the need to wordsmith words to fit an occasion or circumstance, I enjoyed this list of Top Ten Favorite Words (Not in the Dictionary) from Merriam Webster. Who doesn’t feel confuzzled on occasion when searching for just the right word? Certainly when one is wordling, or twitterpating, it can happen.
NPR’s CarTalk, one of my fav radio programs, was the source of a new family favorite term: garage mahal. As in, a garage of such ginormous size that it rivals the house itself in scope and grand design. Once again, it is those funny folks over at Merriam Webster behind the list — who knew dictionary people were such a woot? They have a stodgy reputation that is clearly not deserved. (I would add library folk to that category as well; turns out they can be quite clever with their humor.)
As my spell-checker has a conniption (real word!), I’ll dare to ask:
What are some of your favorite wordsmithed words?
To get you started, I’ll offer my newest:
*blimpofied*: the uncomfortable state of digestion after ordering all-u-can-eat BBQ ribs at Walt’s Barn O’ Pork.
Hypothetical situation, of course.
ha! if only mammograms were more musical, perhaps we wouldn’t dread them so much! maybe i’ll try humming my way through the next one.
You know how a misogynist is someone who hates women? Well, for a while my sister was a massage therapist and my husband liked to call her a “massagynist.” I guess if you wanted to add a definition, that could be a masseuse who hates female clients.
My husband also combines the terms “singing telegram” and “mammagram.” So when my best friend and I went in together for our first preventative tests recently, he kept calling it a “singing mammagram,” which fills my head with humorous images of technicians handling the medical equipment while singing show tunes. Given the testing process, perhaps the theme song to Les Miserables. (My friend called our mammogram outing a “pancake party” since we got our appointments together and… well… I’m sure you can figure out the pancake reference!!!)

And while we’re on the subject of “licious,” hotilicous is one of my husband’s favorite terms. The rest of his made up words are really not suitable for Jane’s blogalicious post. Suffice it to say he is a master of the colorful, off-color term of endearment. Gotta love him.
ginormous (adj): bigger than gigantic and bigger than enormous
Humm… I think I had a ginormous headache after chillax with a bottle of gin a couple of Friday’s ago. Woot!
Mar, you’re right — ginormous is a bazillion times bigger than enormous.
I am partial to “buffalicious” and, of course, “blogalicious”. Throughout my childhood, my dad would frequently “gauran-damn-tee” us of the consequences of certain behaviors. Ah, Jane, the list could go on and on and on….
Nan,
CAN’T BELIEVE I FORGOT TO INCLUDE BLOGALICIOUS!
